At DESIGN TRUTH Whole Home Design Solutions, yes, we bring you award winning design and exemplary workmanship. Over and above these from all the team, I bring a unique perspective to any project. My experience in structural analysis and design, and environmental controls and diagnosis means that the design process starts with that experience as opposed to the industry standard: "Design first, and then hire an engineer to figure out if it will stand up." Also, whenever structural changes are needed, my services include my own structural recommendations on a prepared drawing that is then submitted to an engineer for approval and stamping. This procedure protects you, me and our trades people. Also, this streamlining speeds up the process and keeps costs of structural changes down. My recommendations that get sent to the engineer always stay within the skill level of our crew so that we are not having to go to outside, more expensive, sources for implementation.
One of the drawings shown above represents a significant savings for the client. The engineer had recommended 3 steel posts in the basement level to carry the new pyramidal skylight well. The contractor quoted an extra $20,000 minimum for the steels posts. I created this drawing and developed a structural solution that negated the need for the steel posts. The engineer said that he had not seen this type solution before but did the calculations and approved and stamped the drawing. There were significant structural changes to this residence but no cosmetic damage in the basement level at all. This meant that the clients could set up a clean and undisturbed living area in the basement while this major renovation took place. In the same job, which was during the pandemic, laminated beams were in short supply. This drawing shows a step backward to regular framing lumber to achieve the same result at less cost and using readily available materials.
This added knowledge carries over into every job.
Canada is the best country in the world to live in, but that said we have a climate that can wreak havoc on our buildings and thus our health and enjoyment of life. Canada's has one of the most extreme variances in climate of any country. 20°C inside and -40°C outside, although rare, constitutes a 60°C difference between the inside and outside environments. Many of today's accepted building methods and products are actually causing more problems than they solve. I have seen that many contractor's do not understand the physics of what is happening as heat transfers through the wall, they simply know how too construct it. The problem comes when that contractor alters the building method without really understanding what's going on. Frozen pipes, water soaked insulation, dry-rot wood, mold and mildew accumulation are just some of the problems created when a builder doesn't understand the physics.
For me, this is a continuation my research thesis studies at Carleton Architecture. Now, I bring this added knowledge to my clients and their projects.
